Weed edibles are food and drink products infused with cannabis, which are consumed orally for recreational or medicinal effects. They are an alternative to smoking and vaping, offering longer-lasting effects but with a delayed onset and unique risks.
Types of edibles
Cannabis can be infused into nearly any food or drink item, and many types are available in dispensaries or can be made at home.
  • Baked goods: This includes classic “pot brownies” as well as cookies, cakes, and other pastries.
  • Candies and gummies: One of the most popular forms, these come in many flavors, shapes, and dosages.
  • Chocolates: Infused chocolate bars are a common and effective way to mask the taste of cannabis.
  • Beverages: This category includes THC-infused seltzers, sodas, teas, and drink mixes.
  • Tinctures: A liquid extract typically placed under the tongue for absorption, though it can also be mixed into food or drinks.
  • Savory snacks: The market also includes less common items like popcorn, chips, and sauces.
How edibles affect the body
When you consume an edible, the cannabinoids are absorbed through the digestive system and metabolized by the liver, resulting in a different and often more intense experience than inhaling cannabis.
  • Delayed onset: Unlike smoking, which takes effect within minutes, edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours or more to kick in, and peak effects may not occur for up to 4 hours.
  • Longer-lasting effects: Because the active compounds are released more slowly, the effects of edibles can last from 6 to 12 hours, with residual effects lasting up to 24 hours.
  • Increased potency: In the liver, THC is converted into a more potent form called 11-hydroxy-THC. This metabolite contributes to the stronger and longer-lasting psychoactive effects of edibles.
Risks and precautions
Because of their delayed and intense effects, edibles carry specific risks, especially related to overconsumption and accidental ingestion.
  • Overdosing: It is easy to take too much of an edible, as users may consume more while waiting for the initial effects to kick in. This can lead to severe anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, and nausea.
  • Accidental ingestion: Edibles, particularly gummies and baked goods, can look identical to regular treats. This poses a serious risk to children and pets who may accidentally consume them. Storing edibles in child-resistant containers is critical.
  • Unpredictable effects: An individual’s reaction to edibles can vary significantly based on metabolism, body weight, tolerance, and other factors. It is essential to “start low and go slow” to gauge personal tolerance.
  • Health interactions: Edibles can interact with alcohol and other medications, potentially causing serious health complications. Long-term, high-dose cannabis use is also associated with mental and cardiovascular risks.
Dosing guidance
  • Standard dosage: A low starting dose is generally considered to be 2.5–5 mg of THC, especially for new users.
  • Wait and see: After taking a dose, wait at least one to two hours before considering more.
  • Read labels: Legally sold edibles will have the THC and CBD content clearly labeled. Always check the serving size, as one edible item may contain multiple doses.
